People ask me how long we will homeschool our children. I usually reply that we are taking it one year (and sometimes one day) at a time. We hope to homeschool our children for the next 16 years, until the youngest is finished High School. But this set me to wondering what the future will hold. What will the homeschooling environment be like 16 years from now?

Homeschooling is far too entrenched as a movement to simply be shut down by an over-zealous government. But it is quite possible governments could legislate in ways which will restrict our freedoms. Perhaps the biggest threat to homeschooling will be its own popularity. As homeschooling becomes more popular we can expect some members of the educational establishment to become threatened. Many teachers understand they cannot reach every child, and are supportive of homeschooling. But some will see it as a matter of retaining their job and will join a fight to restrict the rights of homeschoolers (and will provide motives of wanting to do what’s best for the children).

Popularity may lead some people to homeschool who really shouldn’t be homeschooling. Homeschooling requires commitment and sacrifice. Many people will want the results of homeschooling without having the vision for a real education that makes the results possible. As a result, parents who don’t want to do what it takes to give their children the best education will try homeschooling and fail. Of course there will be no shortage of pundits to claim homeschooling itself is the problem, and that governments are not doing enough to protect children from the perils of homeschooling.

So what can we do now to make sure the future is bright? As Christians, we know prayer should be our weapon of first choice, not our desperate last resort.  Pray for those in authority! Also, in a democracy, we have the right to be heard. Those who do not exercise this right may as well be living in a totalitarian state. Learn how to express your opinion with your elected representatives. Finally, the current crop of homeschooled children may be our best advertising. When our young people are involved in the community and in the political process, our government sees first hand the value of home education.
